Nnamdi Kanu's lawyer has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has no right to deploy troops to Gambia
A
lawyer to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra has said that
President Muhammadu Buhari lack the justification to deploy Nigerian
troops to Gambia.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Ifeanyi Ejiofor said the action by the president is hypocritical.
It
is purely hypocritical, only a few days ago, troops were deployed to
Gambia to enforce orders made by ECOWAS, the same ECOWAS that the
federal government had disobeyed their order.
"You
are talking about going to another country to go and enforce rule of
law when in your own country you have not been able to obey orders made
by the court," Ejiofor said.
"It is also in this country
that we have an order where a court directed that Dasuki should be
released by ECOWAS court, that ECOWAS court that you are trying to go
and defend their interest, you are yet to comply with their order
concerning your country," he said.
Citing
more cases like that of the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria
Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, Ejiofor said Nigeria has no business in Gambia
having disobeyed several court orders in the country.
“All
these orders made by both local and international courts, you
disobeyed, now you have the effrontery to deploy troops to Gambia to go
and enforce rule of law over there, is that possible?” Ejiofor asked.
On Tuesday, January 18, the
Nigerian air force deployed 200 troops to Gambia in preparation for the
inauguration of Adama Barrow, Gambia’s president-elect.
The
deployment of the troops came after the Economic Community of West
African States (ECOWAS) ordered the deployment of military contingency
to Gambia.
The contingency were
deployed to ensure a peaceful transition of power between the nation’s
president Yahya Jammeh and the president-elect.
